The technical team for the NHI project on sustainable hydropower development alternatives for the greater Mekong basin is on track to deliver final findings and conclusions on the Sambor Dam Alternatives Assessment to the Royal Government of Cambodia by the end of 2016. This will include a “no dam” alternative that promises to perform better than any of the hydropower dam alternatives with regard to every planning objective and would leave the mainstream of the Mekong River entirely free of dams below the confluence of the Xe Kong. This reach, from the Vietnam border in Lao PDR to the confluence and then all the way to the Mekong Delta and the South China Sea would remain free flowing. This is the most productive freshwater fishery in the world.
